The coating of tools and molds for polymer processing has significance in several respects. Conventional surface coating techniques (e.g. PVD and CVD processes) lead to very good coating properties. However, such processes are often a major cost factor because of their complex application. In this project a bottom-up approach is proposed which considers the improvement of the anti-adhesive properties and the corrosion resistance based on a cost effective multilayer coating process. The coating should, moreover, be suitable for cleaning and allow for a facile restoration (i.e., re-coating). To realize the desired multiple functions of the coating, a layer system is planned: (A) a first layer directly placed on the metal of tools and dies, serving as a functional and detachable interlayer, and (B) the bilayer topcoat comprising nanostructured oxidic films and molecular coatings based on functional organosilanes which provides wear-reducing, anti-corrosive and anti-adhesive properties. To evaluate the applicability of the coatings they are applied on typical tools for polymer processing and investigated under laboratory and typical process conditions. A coating system is created, which (i) acts anti-adhesive on mold surfaces and in cooling channels, (ii) prevents corrosive wear, (iii) prevents degradation reactions of the polymer in contact with metal molds, (iv) has a high durability during polymer processing and reduces abrasive wear, (v) provides the possibility for convenient re-coating, and (vi) is affordable and easy to handle in an industrial environment. Different economic groups benefit directly from the developed coatings as it is possible to produce high quality products. The results of the project can be implemented in polymer processing and chemical industries, based on the published results of the CARACOAT project, in consultation of the participating SME User Committee or in consultation of other service providers industries.
